What Mutual Funds Won’t tell you.
Posted by Steve on April 30th, 2008 filed in MoneyMutual funds are misunderstood. They come in hundreds of flavors. Small cap funds. Large cap funds. Funds that are composed of every conceivable sector of the market.
Want to know how many mutual funds there are? Pinning a definite number down is difficult. After googling “number of mutual funds” the search results were vague. Most results were advice and sign up offerings. Several sites say “there are thousands of mutual funds,” one said there were “over seven thousand.” The problem is that there were no references cited. Without an irrefutable source all I found is speculation.
I believe the market is saturated with too many mutual funds. When opening the paper or the latest issue of “my financial advice” magazine the first thing I ask myself is whether that mutual fund will be around in forty years when I retire. Who wants to put large sums of money earmarked for retirement in a vehicle that may not be around in ten years?
There is a solution. Think for yourself. We have more information at our fingertips today than any other period in history. Take advantage of it. Do your own research before you set foot into your “financial advisor’s” office. Or brokerage firm. Have you ever asked yourself why they’re called “broker’s?”
